Asian skin: be wary of chemical peels

About a year ago, I came across some rave reviews on home chemical peels to rid of acne and acne scarring. Excited for quick results, I purchased Salicylic/20 and Lactic acid/50. These gel peels are produced in strengths that are safe to use by yourself at home. As a side note, both lactic acid and salicylic acid are effective in targeting acne. Lactic acid at lower concentrations is good for more mature and/or sensitive skin to improve fine lines and wrinkles. Salicylic acid is primarily used for acne, hyperpigmentation and discoloration. Unfortunately, both of these gel peels were too strong for my skin, and not only did my hyperpigmentation get worse, but so did my acne.

Bottom line: Strong chemical peels can cause hyperpigmentation and discoloration on Asian skin. If you are thinking about using chemical peels, start at an extremely low concentration and reduce the time the chemical is exposed to your skin.

Also, chemical peels can aggravate active acne lesions and cause scarring, especially at higher concentrations. Don't get me wrong! Home chemical peels can be very beneficial for many individuals who are looking to even out skin tone, reduce pigmentation and improve fine lines. There is just something about Asian skin that needs extra precaution when using these products. My suggestion is to use products with salicylic acid and glycolic acid in very mild concentrations (2-5% for salicylic acid and 10% for glycolic acid). It may take longer to get the same effects as a strong chemical peel, but at least you will be avoiding the dangers of developing new hyperpigmentation, acne and scarring.

Here is a list of my recommended mild chemical exfoliators:
I personally cannot rave enough about the above products. They are mild and gentle, yet super effective!
